Jochen Kühnl
Dr. Jochen Kühnl is senior safety assessor at Beiersdorf. He graduated in Biology at the University of Hamburg and obtained his Ph.D. working on cell biological topics at the University of Münster. Switching to corporate science, he engaged as research scientist on diseased skin conditions at Beiersdorf and subsequently headed the Experimental Toxicology Lab, being responsible for the development and use of New Approach Methodologies for Skin Sensitization and new options for systemic toxicity assessment such as Microphysiological Systems to elucidate the chemical fate of cosmetic ingredients. Dr. Kühnl is member of the working group for skin sensitization of the International Consortium for Cosmetic Safety. Since 2022, Dr. Kühnl is working as Safety Assessor to grant the safety of ingredients and finished cosmetic products.

Next-generation risk assessment (NGRA) approaches based on New Approach Methodologies are increasingly utilized in safety assessments of consumer products. Skin sensitization is a well-characterized toxicological endpoint for which a well-accepted Adverse Outcome Pathway can be assessed by several validated or at least well-described assays. In silico prediction tools are of high importance for prioritization, hypothesis formation, and as input in Defined Approaches. Moreover, machine learning-based decision algorithms that integrate in silico and in vitro data are fundamental for several advanced-defined approaches. This talk describes the integration of Skin Doctor CP (Wilm et al., 2019, 2020), an advanced and transparent prediction tools featuring Conformal Prediction in a Bayesian Network-based defined approach to be utilized for decision-making in skin sensitization assessment. The talk will zone out to provide a short overview of real-life challenges for Assays & Defined Approaches for skin sensitization and potential assessment options to broaden the applicability domain for testing.
