Perspective on the Application of SSbD to Cosmetics Products, Ze’evi Ma’or (AHAVA)
An industry perspective on the incorporation of SSbD into cosmetics product development and innovation
The cosmetics industry is well established, highly competitive, and constantly under pressure to innovate. While meeting rising consumer expectations for safety, transparency, and environmental responsibility, the concept of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) offers newness and exciting opportunity for change. Moreover, SSbD can serve as a practical and forward-looking approach to creating cosmetic products that bring hope for better health to the people and the planet.
In a short talk, AHAVA Dead Sea Laboratories will share its experience and industry perspective on how SSbD can be applied to cosmetic product development and innovation. From selecting safer, sustainable raw materials to designing packaging with a lower environmental footprint, the SSbD approach can guide decisions at every stage of the product lifecycle. This process also requires close collaboration with many important stakeholders, including consumers, retailers, marketing professionals, suppliers, regulators, and even competitors as well as non-competing brands. Each group plays a key role in making SSbD successful—whether by shaping public perception, ensuring supply chain transparency, or helping to define clear standards for what “safe” and “sustainable” truly mean.
As part of the SSbD4CheM project AHAVA practically demonstrates the application of SSbD concept in the fields of skincare. AHAVA will integrate SSbD principles into its work, aiming to adopt SSbD as its strategy to build stronger trust with customers, reduce environmental impact, and stay ahead of emerging regulations.
This presentation invites other stakeholders in skincare, dermatology and other chemical sectors to look at SSbD not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to lead through responsible innovation and meaningful change.
